‘Coffin blocks’ advertised for let

coffinblocksFALKIRK Council has started its search for tenants for the revitalised "Coffin Blocks" in Bo’ness.

It has also advertised homes at its new-build Cadzow development in the town. Both sites will provide affordable housing for rent.

Through it’s Homespot system this week, the Labour-led authority advertised 12 of the 28 two-bedroomed flats in the refurbished blocks at Corbiehall. The development, built in the 1930s, has been named "Matthew Steele Court" after the local architect who designed them. Mr Steele’s most famous work was the historic Hippodrome Cinema, which celebrates its 100th birthday on March 11.

The blocks are known locally as the “Coffin Blocks” because of their coffin-shaped doorways.

The Council has also advertised eight, one-bedroomed flats in its new-build development of 24 homes at Cadzow. The scheme is being called Constable Court in memory or the late Bo’ness Councillors John and Harry Constable.

Bo’ness Labour Councillor Adrian Mahoney said he was pleased to see the properties being advertised. "There’s been great interest in both developments and I’m sure the housing department will get lots of enquiries,” he said. “ Both developments have been constructed to a high standard and are a real credit to Council."

Councillor Mahoney toured Matthew Steele Court with a former tenant last week. He said: "I’ve been pressing to get these blocks brought into the letting pool and I’m delighted that they are now being let to people on the housing waiting list. I understand the first families could move in mid-March, around the same time as the Hippodrome celebrates its big birthday. I think Matthew Steele himself would have approved of the regeneration work. The homes are as good as new inside."

Anyone interested in bidding for the flats can apply via local housing offices, online through the Homespot website – www.falkirk.gov.uk/homespot – or by calling 0800 678 3091.
